Retail Crisis Managers: Today’s Small Business Heroes

When you opened your retail store you never thought you would hear the terms

“liquidation  specialist” or “retail crisis manager”, much less need the services of one.

You started your small  business from scratch. It grew. It made a profit. It became

established and people began treating you  differently. Much differently than before

and you enjoyed it. What seemed like a miracle and blessing  at the time, has

suddenly turned into your worst nightmare.

After ten, twenty, or thirty years of working 24/7, suddenly, like nearly half of the 27

million small  businesses in America, yours has become unprofitable. More often than

not, a small business (or even  large one) finds itself in turmoil after the fact.

In earlier depressions, this usually meant total liquidation and/or bankruptcy. Today

there is a  professional on the horizon, the retail crisis expert also known as retail

crisis consultant, who can  often, keep one from having to file bankruptcy and in many

cases make your business profitable again.

This profession is known as “retail crisis management”. Though there are many now

n this field, finding the right one does not have to be difficult.

Many businesses must close but the retail consultant knows ways to keep losses at

a minimum and  sometimes guide you through profitably (or with minimal losses) in a

closing.

Upon numerous searches on the Internet, I found the name Milton Waldoff and

The Waldoff Group who, at one time or another, has been Yahoo!, MSN, and Google’s

#1 ranked retail crisis manager and turnaround specialist.

I visited the site and read the testimonials. I learned that one of the most

important steps in a retail  crisis is to call the right person early. Even if one has never

heard of a retail turnaround consultant,  more likely than not, one of his/or her

competitors has and has or is using one.

Contacting a retails crisis manager of course is difficult emotionally, but once set

into motion, it is  like couples counseling. Positive things start to happen that you may

not have thought possible. I  won’t sugar-coat the situation. We are in a brutal

economy and there seems to be a “survival of the  fittest” mentality out there. But

there is a change for many businesses, often when they couldn’t see the

light of day. Again this means finding the right professional.

Again this person you seek will be ranked very high on all three major search engines,

and just as important have a roster of happy clients with testimonials that are

checkable on his/or her site, and if possible, years of business experience behind his

or her own belt.  I decided to interview Mr. Waldoff who was generous with his

information. He operates in  Hattiesburg, Ms as a retail turnaround expert aka

liquidation manager.

Waldoff, who operated his family business for __ years and built it into a 60,000

square foot  retail clothing store, says, “Even in the case of long established well

operated stores where  management might be considered professional, where they

feel they really know what they are doing  and are good merchants, survival is often

impossible.  Competition is severe and customers don’t have  a sense of loyalty, good

sales associates are difficult to attract and keep, indeed the retail apparel  business is

difficult, at best, and adds, “We assist in developing realistic goals based on the your

situation, needs and desires.  Working with the stores inventory, sales, mark downs,

etc., developing  sales goals, inventory management, open-to-buy, taking advantage

of the market, merchandising,  merchandise presentation, marketing, advertising, etc.,

to assist retailers achieve realistic goals.

Sonic Heroes: A Battle Won

Video game players around the world would not hesitate to offer a quick response when asked about Sonic the Hedgehog. The blue blur character from Sega of America made it’s debut in June of 1991 with a game title called ‘Sonic Games’. The Sega mascot was a quick hit, and seemed to do what it was designed to do, and that was to rival with Nintendo’s Mario character in the video game arena. Shortly after the release of the first game title the team at Sega moved to expand. Sonic the Hedgehog hit it’s peak in 1994 with the release of several game titles for Sony’s Playstation 2, and the emerging Xbox from Microsoft, which was gaining in popularity. Sonic fans everywhere enjoyed playing Sonic Adventure DX and a new pinball game called Sonic Pinball Party. Then came the first Sonic game title from Sega since 2001, in the shape of ‘Sonic Heroes’.

The preliminary screenshots of Sonic Heroes raised many expectations of what promised to be the best Sonic the Hedgehog game ever. Enticing images of blue skies, checkered hills, and the implementation of alternate routes that players could include in their strategy to complete the game, where all highly expected attributes. Additionally, some more avid players hoped for this release to be the entrance of Sonic into the world of 3D gaming. However, game fans everywhere where deeply disappointed after receiving what has later been labeled one of the worse instances of Sonic the Hedgehog ever made. Many of the issues with previous games where not addressed, such as camera problems in perspective and unresponsive controls, which resulted in a high amount of failed attempts during game play. Considering the game sends the player back to the start line after a failed attempt, it should not come as a surprise that the game produced it’s share of angry gamers. The overall structure of the game delivered and extremely difficult challenge to young sonic fans. Surprisingly enough, Sonic Heroes ended up selling very well, taking sixth place in the United Kingdom. A year after it first came out, the game title still maintained a top ten position in worldwide rankings.

It seems that Sonic fans have overlooked this shady episode of the blue blur as another step in the adventure. It was around this time frame in the year 2000, that Sega took a shot at the game console market with the introduction of the Sega Genesis console. Short lived and retired, Sonic fans seem to have forgotten all about it, along with the unresolved issues of Sonic heroes. The spiky blue blur continues to grow in popularity despite the obstacles, reaching over 20 million fans all over the world.

Silent Heroes Among Us

Silent Heroes Among Us

As I watch my friend deliver extraordinary opening remarks at the inaugural “Heroes Among Us” luncheon presented by the fire foundation in the town where I live, Novato CA, I think about how many silent heroes there are out there and in here, in this room, filled with one hundred distinguished, local citizens. She is the President and CEO of our community bank and at this moment, she is a silent hero: her husband has been activated with his FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) team to the toxic oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico. He’s living at a fish camp and sending back some shocking photos. I imagine the media will be getting them soon enough. What we’ve been told so far, is but the tip of the iceberg.

As the Chair of the event, she quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson: “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.” The folks that have been designated heroes on this particular day, have indeed stood strong five minutes longer. Some are firefighters whose cited heroism occurred off the clock, “on their time and their dime” as the Fire Chief explains, while some are ordinary citizens. They are adorned with blue ribbons and gold medals and shortly will receive a statute of a firefighter with a helmet on, a universal symbol of fire service. Some have donated money; all have donated immeasurable hours of time.

I work with my husband (who has always been my silent hero) and my daughter, and we do a lot of work with fire, police and sheriff departments. I am always amazed at the dedication in these organizations. In my estimation it is unwavering dedication to the daily task at hand – keeping their communities safe. They are my clients, but I am their client as well. I just received an email from the Executive Director of the fire foundation, who is a recently retired Fire Marshall and is thrilled now to have more free time for philanthropic activities. He thanked us “for being extraordinary members of our fire family.” For those who don’t have personal relationships with members of these public service organizations, I think this best explains how they view their agencies and the people who work with them – family. A big extended family working in an interconnected, committed network of good deeds and services. The line gets pretty blurred between “on the clock” and “off the clock” efforts, because they are so often “efforting” on behalf of their fellow man, without individual recognition.

As for the recognized heroes, on this particular day, of those who are currently working full time jobs in local fire departments, four went to Haiti to help in the relief efforts – flying in doctors to remote areas of the island, assisting in paramedic services as “roving angels,” doing their share to help this ravaged community. One is eyeball-deep in fundraising for cancer prevention, one is the chief elf for the ever expanding Christmas toy drive, one heads up a summer “fire” camp for disadvantaged children. When accepting their honors, to a one, they dismissed their individual actions in favor of the bigger picture. After their brief moments in the sun, they no doubt will put their medals and statues in a place of honor and get back to their work as silent heroes. Because for them, there is always much more to be done.

Of the lay recipients, one will stay in my mind for a long time. One will help me to remember that each day we are here together – as friends, lovers, family, community – is a precious gift. A retired Colonel wore his recently deceased wife’s medal with pride. As he accepted her posthumous award, and acknowledged her tireless legacy of community philanthropy, he was overwhelmed by his personal grief. At the same time, he looked around the room and saw one hundred beams of light, sympathy and compassion. He saw the results of her endless hours of service reciprocated by a loving community. As he walked back to his seat, all of us embraced this silent hero.

Is your IT company insolvent

Is my IT business insolvent, will be a question many small business owners will be asking themselves during this recession. It is crucial to understand this as it will affect your decision whether to take formal insolvency advice and hence the need to shut down a company.

The classic definitions of insolvency are that your assets are less than your liabilities or you cannot pay your debts as and when they fall due.

However there are a number of other factors which also give clues as to insolvency. I have produced a series of articles each dealing with some points to bear in mind. Taking the two tests above as our lead we have:-

1) The cash flow test; simply can the business pay its debts when they become due for payment. The most common example of this is a failure to pay PAYE and NIC to the Revenue on time each month. They always appear as a creditor in any liquidation. Similarly, if you have suppliers who grant you 30 days credit, are you pushing these repayments beyond 60 days.

2) The Balance Sheet test; or the do you owe more than you own test. This needs honest consideration as a cursory glance of balance sheet may indicate that it is solvent, but on closer inspection some items such as stock may be overstated or plant and machinery not written down correctly, and debtors and work in progress not readily collectable. Taking these into account it may be that the balance sheet looks very different.

3) The Legal processes test; The simple test here is whether the company is receiving letters before action, or even worse, writs or summonses. These legal actions may sometimes result from an oversight and can be simply paid, however if they are not and are repeated and not settled then this is an indication that cash is not readily available and action needs to be taken.

As directors you need to be wary of these as there are penalties for wrongful trading of up to 15 years disqualification as a director.

You have a number of options such as Creditors Voluntary Liquidation, Administration of Company Voluntary Arrangement.

If you are in any doubt whatsoever make sure you take professional advice.  We have helped many dozens of companies shut down in the last year. We can start and finish the process in as little as three weeks and in the interim help you re-start.
